Somalis are highly intelligent, super affectionate cats with stunning looks and a will to participate in everything you do. Wherever you are – they will be. They will help with everything, whether that is cooking dinner, making the bed, cleaning, working on the computer or just hanging out on the couch. Even the bathtub will have company – yes, some of them like to play in the water, too! No place every goes unexplored, whether it is the top of the cupboard or the depths of a carrier bag. Fortunately, Somalis are agile and nimble cats so most of the time things are left neatly in place – unless there is a point to make, of course…

Our Somalis like physical contact. A lap, a shoulder or just a space on the desk where they can be sure of touching is all extremely popular. In the bed, under the cover, over the covers – they will be wherever you allow them. Even as I write this, I have a pile of Somali girls on my desk – one with a possessive paw on my arm, the other with a possessive paw on her sister. Somalis are very sociable cats that will follow you around the house, wherever you go. Can’t Possibly Go To The Bathroom Without Us, they say. Must Monitor That You Chop The Vegetables Right, they will comment, hanging on my shoulder and staring intently at what I am doing. Ahhh, Best Place Ever, they will sigh deeply as they settle in to an evening on the couch – often fitting multiple cats on one lap. Ianthe Makes A Good Mattress, Izabelle will claim. Izzie Nice Duvet, Ianthe will mumble and they will settle into boneless deep sleep, purring wildly all the time.

Somalis are chatty cats. They chirrup softly, they croon, they give short, urgent calls and occasionally louder ones, too. ┬áIanthe sounds like a crocodile baby that has just hatched, walking around the house commenting on everything. They will inevitably answer if you speak to them – Important To Be Polite, they say – and cuddle sessions are accompanied by lots of affectionate purring and chirruping.

One thing to be aware of is that Somalis are not suitable to roam free. They have no fear and will jump straight out in front of cars, so they are at high risk of dying young if left to roam. We have a cat proof garden that allows them fresh air and lots of play without having the risk of running away. There are many different ways of cat proofing your garden available – give us a shout and we will share our experiences with you.
